As consumer demand for environmentally friendly practices grows, leading brands are enhancing their commitment to sustainable packaging. This year, they’re making significant strides in using materials ranging from aluminium and cardboard to fully biodegradable substances. Let’s delve into how these companies are transforming their packaging strategies.

Ferrero

The confectionery giant Ferrero has experienced a substantial 16% growth since 2018. However, this growth has led to increased emissions, with packaging accounting for 12% of the company’s scope 3 emissions. Committed to reducing their environmental impact, Ferrero is implementing significant changes. The company behind Ferrero Rocher, Tic Tac, and Kinder aims to make 90% of their packaging reusable, compostable, or recyclable. They’ve already reached a 78% mono-material rate for their plastic materials and have replaced the Rocher’s polystyrene box with polypropylene, thus eliminating the use of virgin plastic.

Tesco

Tesco, a major UK supermarket, has partnered with supplier WEPA to recycle their eco-friendly cardboard packaging in a unique way. Customers can now purchase high-quality toilet and kitchen rolls made from cardboard boxes. This inventive process combines supermarket corrugated cards and home delivery boxes with other recycled materials, using fewer resources than conventional paper production. Additionally, they’ve introduced paper packaging for their pocket tissue products, thereby removing plastic packaging.

Walkers

Walkers Crisps, also known as Lays in several countries, is making sustainability a priority. They’ve introduced new paper packaging for all multipacks, aiming to reduce virgin plastic usage by approximately 180 tonnes annually. These new paper bags can be recycled at home and will soon be available in all major supermarkets following a successful trial in Tesco stores. This initiative is part of a broader sustainability plan by parent company Pepsico, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in crisp and snack bags by 2030.

LVMH

LVMH Beauty is disrupting the beauty and fashion industry with their recent plans to remove all plastic containers from their cosmetic and beauty range. They’re introducing Surlyn, a sustainable alternative derived from raw materials including waste cooking oil. UK fashion legend Stella McCartney is also participating, using a compostable bio-based plastic known as TIPA for their packaging. This material provides the practical benefits of conventional plastic but is entirely biodegradable.

Lush

Lush is embracing sustainability by using diverted plastic for their product packaging. They’re using bottles certified by Prevented Ocean Plastic, collected within 50km of an ocean coastline or major waterway. This initiative is expected to prevent over three million plastic bottles from polluting our oceans.

Aldi

Aldi, a German supermarket, has introduced the UK’s first supermarket own-brand wines in paper bottles. These 100% recyclable materials are helping Aldi reduce their carbon footprint. The new bottles are five times lighter than glass, resulting in lower carbon emissions from transportation.
